Dera Sacha Sauda chief convicted in rape case

A CBI court in Panchkula on 25th August found Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty in a rape case. He is facing up to seven years in jail. A former follower had accused Singh of repeatedly raping her inside the Dera campus near Sirsa in Haryana. The alleged incident took place in 1999. An FIR was registered in 2002. The Dera chief and the management of the sect have denied the allegations all throughout. Haryana and Punjab, especially, Chandigarh, are on high alert to deal with any situation on the law and order front. Several companies of the paramilitary forces have reached the twin States, with tight security arrangements being put in place. The army has taken him into protective custody and he will be transferred to a military base.

Explanation: Following a rap by the Comptroller and Auditor General(CAG), the railways is removing blankets from the air-conditioned coaches and is instead regulating the temperature to tolerable levels. A railway official said the no-blanket rule is being implemented in the third AC coaches of the Jammu Mail on pilot basis. It would be extended to other trains after studying the outcome. The Railways has begun thermal control and regulating the temperature in the third AC compartment of Jammu Mail to around 24-26 degree Celsius from the current 19 degrees so that passengers are comfortable and do not need blankets.
